Socialist Republican Solidarity with the League of Poor Peasants Brazil and the Agrarian Revolution

In recent weeks Anti Imperialist Action Ireland has been leading a campaign of solidarity highlighting the revolutionary work of the League of Poor Peasants in Brazil the organisation leading the Agrarian Revolution and organising the Peasants to take back their land.

The League of Poor Peasants arose following the Battle of Santa Elina on August 9 1995. The battle had been organised in order to confront the latifundium, headed by retired army colonel Antenor Duarte, and saw militant revolutionaries organizing more than 600 families to take over a large estate, the 18,000-hectare Santa Elina farm in the municipality of Corumbiara. Betrayed by revisionists to the landowners and reactionary state, the revolutionaries were attacked and the state launched a massacre.

Writing about the battle of Santa Elina in ‘Our Road’ the LCP state that the result was , ‘16 dead, 7 disappeared, more than 200 comrades with serious consequences resulting from the savagery unleashed by the police, and several persecuted comrades. The number of victims was not higher because the peasants organized the resistance with the weapons they had: sticks, scythes and hunting rifles.

The massacre was an intentionally prepared action, with military planning, with the objective of spreading terror among the peasant families and thus paralyzing the land seizures of the latifundia in Rondônia and in the country. However, contrary to what was expected, the bloody repression generated enormous solidarity and made the hatred of the masses explode, raising a wave of new land seizures throughout Brazil.’

From that birth of fire, the LCP has grown and multiplied to be the leading force of the Agrarian and Democratic Revolution in Brazil. Today it is continuing that fight against the landowners and reactionary state for New Power in Brazil. Anti Imperialist Action Ireland stands with the LCP and the Agrarian Revolution and will continue to build our solidarity campaign against no the weeks ahead!
