James Connolly and the Broad Front

Between January 19- 22nd 1916, that Irish Socialist Republican Leader James Connolly, Commandant of the Irish Citizen Army, entered into three days of extensive discussions with the Military Council of the Irish Republican Brotherhood on plans for a rising against British Rule.

While Connolly and the Citizen Army had for sometime openly building towards armed resistance to British Rule the IRB had been laying plans in secret.

During the course of this historic meeting, sometimes referred to as the ‘Kidnapp of James Connolly’ the IRB outlined their plans to the Citizen Army Chief and informed him of the Easter Sunday date for the Rising.

Connolly became a member of the Military Council and a key planner of the Rising and it’s main Military commander.

From the time of this important meeting the Citizen Army would work as part of a Broad Front for National Liberation with the IRB, the Volunteers, Cumann na mBan, and Na Fianna Éireann.

It is such an Anti Imperialist Broad Front that holds the key to Irish National Liberation and Socialist Revolution today. In the spirit of James Connolly join us as we build such a Broad Front and a mass popular people’s campaign for the All Ireland People’s Republic
