Socialist Republican Easter Commemorations 2021- Anti Imperialist Action Ireland

The following is a roundup of the Programme of events organized by Socialist Republicans to mark the 105th anniversary of the 1916 Rising. Events took place across Ireland and Scotland to honour the men and women of every generation who have fought and died for National Liberation and Socialist Revolution and for the All Ireland People’s Republic.

The annual Easter Commemorations are a time when Republicans rededicate themselves to the cause of Freedom and it was particularly inspiring to see large numbers of young people taking part in events organized by AIA across the country.

Ireland:

Wednesday March 31st– Monaghan

Beginning Anti Imperialist Action Ireland’s Easter Programme of events, on Wednesday March 31st, Socialist Republicans from Armagh and Monaghan held wreath layings at the graves of IRA Volunteer Seamus McElwaine and IRA Vol. Jim Layangh in county Monaghan. The Revolutionary example of McElwaine and Lynagh have been a source of major inspiration for AIA, so it was fitting to being this year’s Programme of commemorative events at their gravesides.

Thursday April 1st– Deansgrange

Socialist Republicans from Dún Laoighaire marked the 105thanniversary of the 1916 Rising with a wreathlaying at the Republican Plot in Deansgrange Cemetery.

Thursday April 1st– Galway

Socialist Republicans in Galway marked the 105th anniversary of the 1916 Rising with anti fascist stickering in the city, building a presence for the revolutionary movement in the county were Commandant General Liam Mellows led a successful guerrilla campaign in 1916.

Friday April 2nd– Tallaght

Tallaght Remembers Ireland’s Patriot Dead

Socialist Republicans in Tallaght held a werathlaying in honour of all who have fought and died for Irish Freedom at the Fenian monument in Tallaght village, close to the spot where members of the IRB mobilized in 1867 for the Fenian uprising. The event included a reading of the Fenian Proclamation of 1867.

Saturday April 3rd – Bray

North Wicklow Remembers Ireland’s Patriot Dead

There was a strong turn out in Bray for the annual Socialist Republican 1916 Commemoration.

Led by a lone piper and a section of the Socialist Republican Colour Party, participants made their way from St. Peter’s Church to the grave side of of Vol. Seamus Costello for a reading of the 1916 Proclamation and a minutes silence for the men and women of every generation who have fought and died for Irish Freedom and Socialism.

Wreaths were laid on behalf of Anti Imperialist Action, Irish Socialist Republicans and the Anti Internment Group of Ireland.

The main oration was delivered by Irish Socialist Republican Sean Doyle who stressed the need for Socialist Republicans to build an Anti Imperialist Broad Front as the vehicle for a successful struggle for National Liberation and Socialist Revolution.

The event was brought to a close with a rousing rendition of Amhrán na bhFian.

Saturday April 3rd – Donegal

Donegal Remembers Ireland’s Patriot Dead

As part of Easter week commemorations throughout the country Socialist Republicans in the North West laid flowers today at the Drumboe Martyrs memorial in Stranorlar, Co. Donegal.

On 14 March 1923, four anti-Treaty IRA fighters, Charles Daly, Sean Larkin, Daniel Enwright, and Timothy O’ Sullivan, who had been captured and held in Drumboe castle for five months were shot by the Free State establishment. Hugh Gallagher from Derry was shot trying to escape in December 1923. Their bodies were put into a ready made grave.

They were murdered by the 26 county Free State because they were loyal to the 1916 Republic and believed that the ownership of Ireland belonged to the people of Ireland as a right.

Saturday April 3rd – Arklow

Arklow Remembers Ireland’s Patriot Dead

Members of Anti Imperialist Action in Arklow held the annual local 1916 commemoration at the Graveside of United Irish leader Myles Ó Neill in the Abbey Graveyard in the South County Wicklow Town.

Myles Ó Neill was arrested, along with other Arklow leaders a few weeks prior to the oncoming rebellion.
They were arrested on the word of an Informer in their ranks.

During the ceremony an activist from Macradh Irish Socialist Republican Youth laid a wreath to our fallen martyrs and an AIA activist read out the Co. Wicklow Roll of Honour.

Sunday April 4th – Dublin

Upwards of 40 Republicans gathered at the 1916 monument in Glasnevin today to mark the 105th Anniversary of the Rising and to honour all those of every he generation who have fought and died for Irish freedom

The 1916 monument in the St Pauls section of Glasnevin is the site of a mass grave of the Republican dead consisting of members of the Irish Citizen Army and the Irish Volunteers who joined together that Easter Monday morning and established the Army of the Irish Republic an Anti Imperialist Broad Front and Proclaimed Ireland a sovereign, All Ireland Republic.

The event, which was particularly notable for the large amount of youth in attendance, was led by a lone Piper and included a reading of the 1916 Proclamation and ‘For The Citizen Army’ by James Connolly. Lilies were laid on behalf of Anti Imperialist Action, Irish Socialist Republicans and the Anti internment group of Ireland

The event was brought to a close with a haunting rendition of ‘Where oh Where is Our James Connolly’ sung by Diarmuid Breathnach

Sunday April 4th – Meath

Meath Remembers Ireland’s Patriot Dead

Socialist Republicans from Kildare and Meath held a wreathlaying to honour the men amd women of every generation who have fought and died for Irish Freedom and the monument to the Republican Maryrs at the battle of Ashbourne, in County Meath.

Sunday April 4th– Howth

Howth Remembers Ireland’s Patriot Dead

Socialist Republicans in Howth laid wreaths at the graves of Vol Pearse McLoughlin, Vol Jack Moore, Vol Ellen Moore and their comrades Andrew Drummond and Michael Moore.

Sunday April 4th – Wexford    

Socialist Republicans and members of Anti Imperialst Action in South Leinster held a wreathlaying ceremony at the grave of Irish Socialist Republican Liam Mellows, in Castletown, Co. Wexford.

Sunday April 4th – Bluebell

Marking the 105th Anniversary of the 1916 Rising, Socialist Republicans held a dignified wreath laying in Honour of Ireland’s Patriot Dead in Bluebell Cemetery, Dublin 12.

Bluebell Cemetery is the final resting place of a number of Irish Citizen Army, IRA and Cumman na mBan Volunteers who played their part in the struggle for National Liberation from 1913 right up to the 1940s.

The event included a reading of the 1916 Proclamation, a minutes silence for all those who have given their lives for Irish Freedom and a wreath laying by Anti Imperialist Action’s Dublin South City Coiste.

The event was brought to a close with an Easter Oration by a member of Macradh-ISR Youth.

Monday April 5th– Belfast

Dozens of Socialist Republicans assembled in Milltown Cemetery in Belfast to honour the men and women of Easter week.

A lone piper led a banner which read “We Serve Neither King Nor Kaiser” and marched to the Fenian Harbinson plot where the 1916 Proclamation of the Irish Republic was read. A statement from Undod – Welsh Socialist Republicans was also read out in solidarity with the Irish struggle for national liberation and socialism.

Wreaths were laid on behalf of Anti Imperialist Action Ireland, Irish Socialist Republicans and Belfast Revolutionary Socialist Republicans.

Scotland

To mark the 105th Anniversary of the 1916 Rising, Irish Socialist Republicans in Scotland held a number of wreath layings this weekend in honour of all the men and women who have fought and died for the All Ireland Socialist Republic.

Events took place at the Birthplace of Commandant General James Connolly, Irish Citizen Army, at the Cowgate in Edinburgh and also at the graves of a number of Irish Republics buried in Scotland including

Volunteer Patrick James Maguire, a native of Derrygawley Fermanagh but emigrated to Glasgow. Joined the Irish Volunteers in 1914 as part of ‘A’ Company of the Glasgow and West of Scotland Regiment and seen action in the GPO.

Volunteer Liam Gribben Quartermaster of ‘A’ company Glasgow

Volunteer Patrick James Maguire, a native of Derrygawley Fermanagh but emigrated to Glasgow. Joined the Irish Volunteers in 1914 as part of ‘A’ Company of the Glasgow and West of Scotland Regiment and seen action in the GPO.

There continues to be strong support for the struggle for Irish National Liberation and Socialist Revolution among the Irish Diaspora in Scotland
