The Lurgan Ambush

Óglach Sean Burns, Óglach Gervaise McKerr and Óglach Eugene Toman were ambushed as they drove through Lurgan on this day in 1982. The cowardly RUC men who carried out this attack were undercover and fired in excess of 100 rounds into the rear of their vehicle, none of the volunteers were armed. This attack was the first of the brutal shoot-to-kill policy.

An inquest was opened into their deaths in 1983 and the RUC men were acquitted in 1984. The inquest was abandoned in 1994 as the RUC refused to hand over documents. It was only in 2007 when the coroner in the north was allowed access to the reports but 14 years on after the inquest was re-opened, the meetings have still not been held. Their families to this day are awaiting justice 39 years after their deaths. Their murderers still walk free.
